This French painted drapers table dates from 1880 in the French Country style. It has a natural timber top made of scrubbed pine above a painted softwood base in off-white and cream, complete with a distressed painted finish, turned legs, and a low open shelf. Visible details include round urn-shaped turnings on the uprights, a protruding top overhang with a simple edge moulding, and gentle surface wear on the cream paint. Placed in a hallway, kitchen or living space, it offers a surface for display and a lower tier for storage. The height from the potboard to the rail measures 47 cm.

Originating in 19th-century French textile shops and haberdasheries, drapers tables were constructed as long, narrow work surfaces designed for measuring, cutting, and displaying bolts of cloth.

These tables were typically built from regional softwoods such as pine or hardwoods like oak, using mortise and tenon joinery. Bases were often painted or left raw, while tops remained unpainted pine to prevent dye transfer onto fabrics.

Authentic examples feature extended linear proportions, hand-turned or tapered legs, original wear patterns along the top work surface, and traditional joinery including pegged joints or hand-cut timber fixings.

A drapers table serves effectively as a freestanding kitchen island, dining room sideboard, or long hallway console table. The lower tier provides functional storage for ceramic vessels, woven baskets, or stacked books.

Dust surfaces using a dry, soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals or excessive moisture that can strip historical paint layers. Clear beeswax can be applied sparingly to bare timber tops to protect against staining while maintaining the patina.
