Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries under Spanish and Flemish influence, painted leather screens gained widespread popularity through the 19th century as functional draught excluders and decorative interior dividers featuring floral, pictorial, or classical scenes.

These screens typically feature calfskin or hide stretched over a wooden framework, decorated with oil paints, gilding, and varnish, and secured along the borders with brass upholstery studs or leather banding.

Authentic pieces feature fine craquelure across the painted surface, natural age-related patina on the leather reverse, brass studs showing hand-hammered irregularities or oxidisation, and period metal hinges connecting the panels.

In modern interiors, a four-fold leather screen can be positioned in an empty corner to add height and texture, placed behind a headboard or sofa as a decorative backdrop, or used to delineate distinct functional zones within open-plan living areas.

Keep the screen away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the leather from drying out or cracking. Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoid liquid cleaners or harsh solvents on the painted surfaces, and apply specialised leather conditioner sparingly only to untreated reverse areas if necessary.
