Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Anglo-Indian furniture emerged during the British colonial period in India, blending traditional European classical silhouettes with native Indian carving traditions. Craftsmen utilised dense indigenous hardwoods to produce pieces featuring high-relief foliage, scrollwork, and architectural detailing adapted from Western pattern books.

Cabinetmakers primarily worked with dense native timbers such as padouk, teak, rosewood, and ebony. Construction techniques relied on hand-cut joinery, thick solid-timber tops, and deep hand-carved decorative motifs designed to withstand tropical climates without warping.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-carving with slight irregularities, hand-sawn timber undersides, and traditional hand-cut dovetail or tenon joinery. The weight of dense hardwoods like padouk, combined with characteristic deep relief carving and natural timber oxidisation, distinguishes original items from later reproductions.

A carved hardwood console table serves as a strong focal point in a hallway, foyer, or living room when paired with clean-lined modern art or a minimalist mirror above it. Combining the elaborate carved timber texture with contemporary lighting and subtle neutral decor creates an engaging balance of historical weight and modern clarity.

Maintain padouk furniture by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and using a soft brush to clear dust from intricate carving recesses. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the timber moisture and protect the original patination, avoiding harsh solvent cleaners or direct sunlight.
