This 18th century Georgian dummy board is a lifesize painted wooden silhouette cutout of a gentleman wearing a wide-brimmed hat, holding a monkey on his shoulder and a satchel under his arm. Constructed from joined pine timber panels with a dark brown painted finish, the piece displays a crusted varnish surface, visible vertical grain lines, and a rectangular block base. Measuring 179 cm high, 66 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, the flat trompe-l'oeil figure stands upright against an interior wall. In a contemporary home, this English Country House object suits placement in an empty corner or hallway to create an illusionistic focal point. The naive artwork requires no floor space beyond its narrow depth, functioning as a traditional decorative screen or conversational display piece within a living room, study, or landing.

Originating in the 17th and 18th centuries, dummy boardsalso known as silent companionsare life-sized painted wooden cutouts depicting human figures, animals, or household staff. They were placed in halls, staircases, and empty corners to create a trompe loeil illusion of company or to serve as decorative hearth screens.

They were typically constructed from joined pine or oak boards, planed flat, primed, and painted in oil. The perimeter edges were bevelled towards the back to enhance the realistic three-dimensional illusion when viewed from a distance.

Authentic period examples feature hand-sawn timber panels, age-appropriate paint craquelure, hand-forged iron or timber rear easel supports, and subtle bevelled profiling along the outer cut edges.

A dummy board is typically styled standing upright against a plain wall, positioned within an unused fireplace alcove, or placed on a wide stair landing to add architectural interest and theatrical scale.

Dust gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush without applying water or chemical solvent cleaners. Position the wooden panel away from direct sunlight, open flames, and radiators to prevent warping and paint flaking.
