This Georgian mahogany deep container comes from the early nineteenth century, specifically around 1820 to 1830, in an English country house style. The warm brown wooden vessel displays a polished finish with minor scuff marks visible along the scalloped top rim edge. The unusual form incorporates four flared sides, with the two longer sides extending outward and curving down into integrated side handles, while the two shorter sides inset slightly towards a rectangular base. The item stands 9 cm high by 23 cm wide and 19 cm deep at the base, with the protruding long sides measuring 35.5 cm wide. Practical for everyday use, the deep tray sits well upon a dining table or sideboard top. It serves effectively as a container for holding fruit, nuts, or chocolates during gatherings. The compact dimensions ensure it occupies minimal space on surfaces while adding traditional character to a room setting.

FAQs

Georgian treen containers are functional wooden vessels crafted during the 18th and early 19th centuries, typically made from hardwoods such as mahogany for serving fruit, nuts, or storing household items.

These pieces were constructed using dense mahogany, frequently featuring carved scalloped edges, flared sides, and hand-joined timber sections finished with natural beeswax or shellac polish.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of hand-planing, original dark patina within recessed angles, slight timber contraction consistent with age, and smooth, hand-carved edges.

Place the vessel on a sideboard, kitchen island, or dining table as a table centrepiece to hold dried botanicals, fruit, or desk accessories.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth and apply a non-silicone beeswax polish occasionally to protect the timber, keeping the vessel clear of moisture and direct heat sources.
