Cribbage experienced a surge in popularity during the Georgian era, becoming a staple pastime in taverns and domestic parlours across Britain. Portable boards were frequently crafted by hand, leading to a wide variety of regional designs and decorative finishes.

Traditional boards were predominantly crafted from native and exotic hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, walnut, and fruitwoods. Pegs were typically fashioned from turned wood, bone, or ivory, often housed within internal compartments or stored separately.

Authenticity is determined by examining tool marks, timber shrinkage, patina, and the regularity of the peg holes, which were hand-drilled rather than mechanically punched. The presence of period-appropriate hand-painted decoration or natural wear around the scoring tracks also indicates age.

An antique cribbage board can be displayed flat on a coffee table, styled atop a stack of vintage books, or placed on a bookshelf as a tactile decorative object that adds historical character to a contemporary space.

Preservation requires keeping wooden boards away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent warping and cracking. Occasional application of microcrystalline wax helps protect the surface finish without damaging historical patination.
