Satsuma ware originated in the Satsuma province during the late sixteenth century and evolved into highly decorated ceramics during the Meiji period. A koro is a traditional vessel designed for burning incense, frequently featuring elaborate gilding and narrative figure painting intended for display and ceremonial use.

Satsuma ceramics are formed from fine earthenware clay covered in a light cream-coloured glazed glaze with minute crackle patterning. Decorators applied detailed polychrome enamel pigments alongside gold leaf gilding to create complex figurative and geometric patterns.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit fine glaze crazing, delicate hand-painted line work, and multi-layered gilding. Makers often marked the base with the Shimazu family crest, a cross within a circle, alongside signatures of renowned workshop artisans.
