Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th-century Victorian silver-plated desk accessory functions as a desk ink stand in a gentleman's library. The piece displays a reflective silver colour with beaded borders tracing the edges, a hinged sloped lid topped with a stepped finial, and four small ball feet supporting the base. Additional elements include a curved front section to support pens and a lower drawer fitted with a small round knob handle. The body measures 10 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 9 cm deep. Placement suits an office desk where it serves for holding pens, nibs, and ink. The structure forms a compact box design with traditional period proportions. Maintenance requires standard care for silver plate. The surface finish catches the ambient light directly on the wooden surface.

FAQs

Silver-plated desk inkstands became widespread during the nineteenth century to provide a dedicated desktop station holding inkwells, pen nibs, and sealing accessories for formal letter writing.

These items were typically constructed from base metals such as nickel silver or copper, electroplated with pure silver, and decorated with die-stamped beaded edging, hand-chasing, and soldered ball feet.

Authentic period examples generally display electroplate hallmarks such as EPNS stamps, maker marks, hand-fitted hinges, and subtle wear revealing the base metal on elevated points.

An antique silver inkstand can be positioned on a modern home office desk, arranged on a library bookshelf, or integrated into a sideboard display alongside leather-bound volumes.

Maintain silver plate by dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth and applying non-abrasive silver polish sparingly to prevent wearing down the electroplated surface.
