Composition or reconstituted stone became prominent in the 19th and 20th centuries as an accessible alternative to hand-carved natural stone. Moulded from crushed stone aggregate and binders, it allowed intricate architectural details and classical animal figures to be reproduced for private gardens and estates.

Composition stone is crafted by mixing crushed limestone, granite, or sand aggregates with Portland cement and water. The mixture is rammed or poured into detailed moulds, curing into a dense, durable material capable of withstanding outdoor weathering.

Authentic mid-to-late 20th-century pieces display natural surface erosion, lichen growth, and subtle colour variations from outdoor exposure. Faint mould seam lines may be visible along the sides, accompanied by a heavy weight and solid aggregate density.
