Dating from the Sheraton period, this table is veneered in figured West Indian satinwood The top and frieze are banded in kingwood with marquetry inlay to the tops of the legs. The interior is baized, it has has double gates and the table is a very good satinwood colour. English, circa 1790.

Originating in late 18th-century Britain, George III card tables were designed for social games such as whist. They characteristically feature hinged, folding tops that rest on gate-legs or swivel mechanisms, lined internally with felt or baize and decorated externally with fine veneers and marquetry.

Satinwood from West Indies or East India was used for its distinctive golden luster and grain patterns. Makers often framed these pieces with tulipwood or rosewood crossbanding, ebony stringing, and internal pine or oak carcass work, alongside woolen baize for the playing surface.

Authentic period tables feature hand-cut joinery, such as irregular dovetails inside the frieze frame, original brass card hinges, and natural timber movement or slight shrinkage. The undersides should reveal hand-planed timber and age-appropriate oxidation on softwood framing.
