This 1920 architectural salvage piece is a theatrical softwood and canvas faux double doorway finished in grey paint. The structure includes a tall moulded frame surround enclosing trompe l'oeil glazing bars with multiple rectangular divisions, above lower doors featuring recessed rectangular panels. Visible details comprise subtle distressing on the painted surfaces, small metal stud fixings along the borders, and linear mouldings outlining the panels. The item measures 252 cm high, 150 cm wide, and 2.5 cm deep. Such a decorative architectural element suits residential interiors as a striking wall-mounted focal point or an ornamental backdrop creating the illusion of an entryway.

Faux doorways were constructed as lightweight stage flats for theatrical productions to give the illusion of real architectural entryways without adding structural weight. Designers used trompe lil techniques and painted timber frames to create perspective and depth under stage lighting.

Traditional theatre flats and faux doorways were constructed using softwoods like pine for the outer frame, combined with stretched canvas, plywood, or thin timber boards. Pigment-based paints and distemper were applied to create faux graining, panel mouldings, and glazed window illusions.

Authentic theatrical props typically exhibit flat back construction designed to sit flush against backdrop walls, along with stage canvas, iron brace attachments, or numbering marks on the reverse. Paint layers often show age-related distressing, flaking, or evidence of repainting between productions.

Position the frame flat against a plain wall or inside a deep alcove to create visual depth and structure within a room. It can also function as a dramatic bed headboard, a decorative room divider, or a backdrop frame for large potted plants.

Keep painted timber props in a climate-controlled environment away from direct moisture and heat sources to prevent timber warping or paint flaking. Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners that could dissolve historical distemper paint.
