This pair of antique Staffordshire dogs dates from the Victorian period around 1860. The decorative figurines are made from earthenware finished in a white glaze with hand-painted black facial features and gold leaf accents on the collars and lockets. Each seated poodle features an applied textured clay coat mimicking clipped fur, separate front legs, and a curled tail adorned with shredded clay. The figures display minor nicks and are free of cracks or restoration. Standing 14 cm high, 10 cm wide, and 7 cm deep, these small ceramic sculptures suit display on a mantelpiece within an English Country House interior style. They sit upright on a flat surface, bringing period character to a living space.

Staffordshire dog figurines are earthenware pottery ornaments produced in Staffordshire, England, predominantly during the 19th century. Originally manufactured in pairs, they were designed to sit on fireplace mantels as decorative accents in Victorian homes.

These figurines were press-molded from earthenware clay in separate sections and joined before firing. They feature lead glazes, hand-painted enamelled facial details, metallic lustres or gilding, and applied shredded clay techniques to simulate textured fur.

Authentic 19th-century pieces often feature a small release hole on the base or back, hand-painted details rather than modern printed transfer decals, age-related craze lines in the glaze, and slight asymmetry due to manual production methods.

Place them symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or bookshelf to add historical texture and structure. They also function well as tactile focal points when incorporated into an eclectic or maximalist tablet-top display.

Dust the ceramics regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft bristle brush to reach fine crevices in textured surfaces. Avoid immersing the ceramic in water or using harsh cleaning solvents, as moisture can enter fine glaze crazing and damage fragile enamel work.
