Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late eighteenth century and remaining popular throughout the nineteenth century, sofa tables were designed to sit behind a sofa to hold lamps, books, or writing materials. They typically feature drop-leaf sides to extend the surface area and slim drawers for storing small stationery items.

These tables feature high-grade birds eye maple veneers laid over a solid hardwood framework, often complemented by ebony or dark wood stringing. Construction details include hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawers, brass keyhole escutcheons, and turned or carved leg supports.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-craftsmanship, such as uneven drawer linings, genuine age-related oxidisation on metal hardware, and characteristic architectural motifs like pointed arches, spandrels, and trefoil inlays.

Position the table directly behind a free-standing sofa, or place it along an entrance hall wall as a console table. The light tone of birds eye maple pairs effectively with neutral plaster walls, modern brass lighting, and contemporary ceramics.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to protect the veneer. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, colour fading, or veneer lifting.
