Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Scagliola is a technique for producing imitation marble and stone inlays using plaster, glue, and mineral pigments. Developed in 17th-century Italy, it became widely popular across Europe during the 18th and early 20th centuries as a lightweight, workable alternative to solid marble for architectural elements and decorative objects.

Traditional scagliola urns are crafted from a compound of selenite plaster, natural glues, and finely ground mineral pigments. This mixture is built up over a wooden or plaster core, carved, polished with oil and wax, and sealed to achieve a marble-like sheen.

Authentic early 20th-century scagliola displays natural surface variation, light seam lines from hand-casting, and subtle patina or surface wear consistent with age. Unlike genuine marble, scagliola is warmer to the touch, slightly lighter in weight, and may show microscopic plaster grain under close inspection.

A pair of scagliola urns can be placed symmetrically flanking a mantlepiece, positioned on either side of an entryway, or set on stair landings to add vertical structure and classic architectural scale to contemporary rooms.

Scagliola surfaces should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and protected from moisture, which can degrade the plaster substrate. Periodic application of a thin layer of natural microcrystalline wax helps preserve the polished lustre and protect the finish.
