This nineteenth-century French Neoclassical occasional table stands 83 cm high, 32 cm wide, and 32 cm deep, constructed from dark brown mahogany combined with brass and ormolu mounts. The square top features a raised pierced brass gallery rail enclosing a marble surface, while the frieze below displays a decorative ormolu guilloche trim along the apron. Four slender, fluted legs support the framework, accented with brass collars at the top and bottom and terminating in curved, tapered feet. A lower X-stretcher unites the uprights near the base, carrying an unusual central brass finial decoration between the curved lower struts. Positioned in an empty corner of a home today, this compact piece serves as a display stand for a favourite vase, lamp, or small ornament. The combination of warm timber tones and gleaming metallic hardware integrates easily into traditional interior schemes, adding a functional surface with classical French character to living rooms, hallways, or reception spaces.

A French gueridon is a small, tall occasional table originating in 17th-century France, initially designed to hold candles or small decorative objects. During the Louis XVI and Neoclassical periods, these tables evolved into slender accent pieces with refined metal mounts and gallery edges.

These tables are typically crafted from fine hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or fruitwood, paired with gilded bronze or brass mounts. The top surfaces frequently feature pierced brass galleries or inset marble tops.

Key identification features include symmetrical proportions, straight fluted tapering legs, brass gallery borders, and classical motif friezes such as guilloche bands or leaf appliques.

Place the table in a hall corner, beside an armchair, or in a window recess to support a table lamp, sculpture, or floral arrangement, adding subtle vertical balance without overwhelming room dimensions.

Routine care involves dusting timber with a soft microfibre cloth and applying beeswax sparingly once or twice a year. Keep brass mounts free from dampness and avoid aggressive polish solutions that can harm the surrounding wood.
