FAQs

Demi lune or half-moon tables gained popularity during the Georgian period as versatile items that could sit flat against a wall when not in use, often featuring fold-over tops to serve dual purposes for dining or card games.

These tables were typically constructed from native or imported hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or mahogany, frequently utilising book-matched veneers, crossbanding, and hand-cut dovetail joints.

Authenticity is assessed by examining timber shrinkage, secondary woods used in the frame, hand-carved details, and the type of fixings and hinges, which should show age-appropriate wear and construction techniques.

An antique card table works well placed flat against an entryway wall or living room perimeter topped with a ceramic lamp or decorative bowl, allowing the historic wood grain to add warmth to contemporary schemes.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically applying a microcrystalline wax to protect the historic polish.
