This early 20th-century Chinese export games set comprises a hardwood chest containing 148 bone and bamboo tiles alongside counters, originating from around 1920. The warm brown wooden cabinet displays brass corner brackets, a top carrying handle, a sliding front panel, and hand-carved green painted Chinese characters. Visible condition points include raised brass corners, issues with the box, one missing handle, one broken drawer knob, and other small nibbles. Measuring in practical terms as a compact portable chest of moderate proportions, it fits easily onto a bookshelf or desk surface in a gentleman's library or study. Today, collectors place this piece on display shelves as a decorative tabletop object or functional gaming set for traditional board games.

Mahjong originated in 19th-century China and experienced an international boom during the 1920s. Chinese craftsmen produced sets specifically tailored for export to Western markets, housed in brass-mounted wooden chests containing stacked drawers of tiles.

Traditional sets were crafted using cattle bone dovetailed onto bamboo backings for the tiles. The storage chests were typically constructed from indigenous hardwoods such as rosewood or mahogany, reinforced with hand-cut brass corner brackets and handles.

Authentic period tiles feature natural grain lines on the bone face, delicate hand-carved characters and symbols with slight variations, and joint lines where the bone is joined to the bamboo backing, rather than modern moulded plastic construction.

A brass-mounted wooden Mahjong box functions as a decorative tabletop accent on a bookshelf, sideboard top, or coffee table. The warm wood tone and metalwork complement both modern minimalist and traditional decorative schemes.

Store the set in a stable environment away from direct sunlight, radiators, or damp conditions to prevent wood warping and bone cracking. Clean gently with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid using harsh chemical cleaners on bone or painted surfaces.
