Beautiful Welsh oak side table.
The top has a rounded moulded edge on four sides, above a drawer with elm linings (and which has never had handles). Below is a wonderful apron fretted with a flowing stylized foliate design. The table has shaped sides and is raised on four square tapered legs with inside chamfers.
This is form of finely fretted patterns was difficult to achieve in oak, which has a tendency to split along the grain, and was a virtuoso form of decoration favoured in certain parts of Wales in the eighteenth century.
Good colour and patination.
Some old woodworm in the elm drawer linings, and a tiny replacement to the fretwork.
