Antique 19th Century Traditional Indian Pot Stand

19th century
For Sale by The Old Yard
Description

An antique 19th century traditional Indian pot stand or rack (possibly Ghadaunji).

This interesting piece of Indian utilitarian furniture holds five pots or vessels which would have probably held water and used in a communal area. It features intricate carving on the finials, end supports and on the front.

The gaps between the slats allow the rounded terracotta pots to sit securely and have worn from many years of use.

It has obvious signs of wear and the pots (each one different) are of a later date to the stand but is a beautiful and decorative piece of Indian vernacular furniture that would look wonderful displayed in a country style kitchen on hallway.

Length: 212 cm

Depth: 43 cm

Total Height: 105 cm

Date of Manufacture

The Old Yard has dated this Antique Indian Pot Stand to the 19th Century.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Heavy hollows worn into the timber slats: decades of resting round water jars.
Through-tenons secured with timber pegs: traditional Indian village joinery.
Deep drying shakes and weathered surfaces: prolonged exposure to water and sun.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A traditional Indian pot stand is a wooden architectural rack or low bench designed historically to elevate water storage vessels off the ground in residential courtyards.

These stands were crafted primarily from dense regional hardwoods such as teak or rosewood, featuring mortise and tenon joinery alongside hand-carved relief decoration.

Authentic pieces exhibit visible hand-tool marks, natural surface patination from age and water exposure, traditional non-mechanical joinery, and natural wear along the support rails.

Position the stand as a low console feature in an entryway, use it to elevate botanical displays, or arrange it with sculptural terracotta ceramics to add tactile interest.

Dust regularly with a dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the timber, ensuring the piece is kept away from direct heat sources.
