Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Floating panel within a mitred frame: traditional joinery allowing movement in seasonal humidity.
Subtle shrinkage gap around the inner panel: natural movement of seasoned timber over decades.
Hand-carved pierced apron with double gourds: auspicious motifs associated with long life.
Soft wear on the carved relief high points: many years of handling.
Square legs ending in inward scrolls: traditional Chinese cabinet work.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Low tables, traditionally known as kang tables, originated in Northern China for use on raised, heated masonry platforms called kang. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, these tables served as functional surfaces for dining, writing, and serving tea within residential spaces.

These tables are traditionally constructed from dense tropical hardwoods, primarily rosewood (zitan or huali), using sophisticated mortise-and-tenon joinery. This technique allows the timber to expand and contract with humidity changes without requiring nails or glue.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature hand-carved decorative aprons, floating top panels to accommodate wood movement, and legs terminating in stylised horse-hoof or scrolled feet. Natural oxidation and age-appropriate wear around the joinery also indicate period origin.

A low hardwood table works as an accent coffee table in a modern living space or alongside low-profile seating. Its structured silhouette and rich grain provide a sculptural contrast against neutral upholstery and contemporary minimalist decor.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax paste annually. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent drying, splitting, or fading of the natural colour.
