This Art Deco Swedish centre or coffee table dates from 1940 and measures 58 cm high and 110 cm wide. Constructed from burr birch, walnut, and ebonised wood in a warm amber brown colour, the circular top displays radial burr wood veneering and a central circular starburst marquetry inlay pattern. The thick top rests upon a pedestal base comprising a concave tripod centre column with stylised split turning ebonised Corinthian columns, standing on shaped ebonised feet. The support plate bears an "R" and "MJOLBY" stamp inside a triangle with three crowns, alongside a date stamp of 1942 on the underside of the top edge. The surface exhibits slight areas of shellac polish crazing, and the base has small veneer splits and chips. Suitable for use as a centre table or coffee table, this piece sits comfortably in a living room, drawing room, or reception space. The circular top provides ample surface area for displaying decorative items, books, or serving drinks, whilst the substantial pedestal base ensures stability on the floor. The combination of figured wood veneers and contrasting dark elements brings a distinct decorative character to interior settings, fitting well within traditional or contemporary room schemes that accommodate mid-century Scandinavian furniture.

FAQs

Swedish Grace represents a transitional movement between 1920s Neoclassicism and 1930s Modernism. It is defined by simple geometric silhouettes, refined proportions, highly figured native timber veneers such as burr birch, and restrained inlaid marquetry motifs.

Cabinetmakers frequently utilized burr birch, flame birch, and walnut for outer surface veneers due to their complex grain patterning. Bases and accent details were often constructed from birch or beech, painted black or polished to create an ebonised contrast.

Authentic pieces from this period often display paper makers labels or branded heat stamps on the underside from established workshops such as Reiners Mobler Mjolby. Construction details include book-matched veneer matching, hand-finished ebonised details, and solid pine or oak substructures beneath the veneer.

Position the table as a central focal point within a living room, foyer, or large seating area. Complement the geometric grain patterns by pairing the piece with tailored upholstery, neutral textured rugs, and understated contemporary lighting.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish periodically along the direction of the wood grain, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, direct sunlight, and placement near active heat radiators.
