Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 18th century French country table has a rustic farmhouse style and a warm brown oak timber construction with a visible grain and a smooth finish. The piece has a broad plank top, two drawers fitted with small round turned wooden knobs, square tapered legs, and visible evidence of age including losses to the drawer and leg tips that have been built back up. The table measures 75 cm high, 160 cm wide, and 69 cm deep, providing a substantial surface for practical daily tasks. In a home today, this table functions as a practical workspace in a kitchen or study, or as a side table in a hallway or living space. The construction includes mortise and tenon joinery, and the two drawers operate smoothly to offer enclosed storage for everyday items. The honest restoration work on the timber complements the overall aesthetic, making it suitable for both traditional and contemporary rustic interiors.

FAQs

French country tables originated in rural provinces during the 17th and 18th centuries, crafted by regional woodworkers for farmhouses and chateaux off-houses. Designed for utilitarian daily tasks, their proportions and features reflected local woodworking traditions rather than formal Parisian court styles.

Craftsmen primarily utilized locally sourced European hardwoods, predominantly solid oak, walnut, and fruitwoods. Construction relied on traditional joinery methods, including pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-planed top planks, and hand-carved wooden drawer runners.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-tool marks, original wooden dowel fixings, and uneven wear consistent with centuries of use. Look for natural oxidisation in the oak timber, hand-cut dovetail or pegged drawer construction, and historical wear on the lower feet.

A French provincial table provides textural contrast in contemporary spaces when paired with minimalist dining chairs or modern artwork. Place it in a hallway as a console, use it as a focal work desk, or integrate it into a contemporary kitchen scheme to add historic character.

Maintain historical oak by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber patina. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and maintain stable indoor humidity to prevent wood shrinkage or splitting.
