Antique Edwardian Inlaid Mahogany Occasional Table C.1905

1900 - 1920
Description

An Edwardian occasional table, crafted in solid mahogany in the Sheraton Revival style, the moulded top edged with crisp crossbanding and geometric stringing, centred by an oval satinwood fan patera, all raised on four splayed square legs united by a conforming crossbanded undertier.

Executed in the Sheraton Revival taste, the piece captures late Georgian neo-classical motifs through a distinctly Edwardian decorative lens, combining light, balanced proportions with precise uniform inlay work characteristic of turn-of-the-century cabinetmaking.

Very good antique condition, with light surface wear consistent with age. Structurally sound and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1905.

This Edwardian occasional table originates from circa 1905 within the Sheraton Revival style, constructed from solid mahogany and satinwood with a warm brown finish. The rectangular top has a moulded edge, crossbanding, geometric stringing, and a central inlaid satinwood fan patera medallion, supported by four tapered, splayed square legs united by a lower tier shelf. The wood exhibits a polished surface with light grain variations and a subtle tonal contrast between the dark mahogany and the lighter inlay motifs. It measures 69 cm high, 68.5 cm wide, and 40 cm deep. Position this table at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair in a living room, drawing room, or hallway to provide a stable surface for lamps, books, or decorative objects. The lower shelf offers additional open storage for magazines or small display pieces, integrating cleanly into traditional or transitional English country house interiors.

FAQs

Edwardian occasional tables from circa 19011910 are recognised by their light, elegant proportions, influenced by 18th-century revival styles. They frequently incorporate fine mahogany timber decorated with satinwood marquetry, geometric stringing, and tapered legs.

Primary construction typically utilised solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over pine frameworks. Decorative inlays often employed contrasting woods such as satinwood, boxwood, and ebony to create delicate motifs and perimeter stringing.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, natural age-related patination, authentic wear to the base of the feet, and hand-applied varnish or French polish finishes.

An occasional table functions well placed beside an armchair or sofa to hold a table lamp, with decorative art books arranged on the lower tier to add visual depth to contemporary living spaces.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the wood grain once or twice a year. Keep the table positioned away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer drying or fading.
