Mid-20th Century Italian Carrara Marble & Brass Coffee Table, C.1950–1970

Later than 1960
Description

A mid-20th century Italian rectangular coffee table, dating to circa 1950–1970, with a heavy white Carrara marble top supported on a brass frame and base.

The brass has developed a natural aged patina, giving the metal a warm golden tone throughout. The table stands on four tapering legs, each with simple stepped detailing and small turned feet.

The legs are united by a particularly distinctive curved stretcher arrangement, formed from four sweeping brass sections that meet at the centre beneath a small decorative finial. This gives the base an elegant and unusual open framework while also providing support to the structure.

The underside of the base is stamped “Made in Italy”.

A wonderful decorative piece for both contemporary and mixed interiors.

FAQs

Mid-20th-century Italian coffee tables frequently feature natural stone surfaces, such as veined Carrara marble, combined with slender metal frames. Influenced by Neoclassical revival and modernist principles, these designs utilise tapered metal legs, architectural stretchers, and understated metallic patination.

These tables typically combine quarried Italian marble slabs with fabricated brass or gilt-metal structural framing. Legs are often cast or turned into tapered profiles, secured with screwed structural joints and reinforced by curved cross-stretchers for stability.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural variation in stone veining, age-appropriate oxidisation on brass components, and period-specific joinery techniques. The weight of genuine marble combined with precision metal framing is characteristic of mid-century Italian production.

A brass and marble low table serves as a central anchor in a living space. It pairs effectively with tailored upholstery, timber elements, and neutral textiles to balance the cool texture of the marble and the warm tone of the metal.

Marble surfaces should be sealed to prevent staining and cleaned using pH-neutral stone cleaners, avoiding acidic substances. Brass elements should be dusted with a dry soft cloth, retaining the natural age patination without applying harsh abrasive polishes.
