This Japanese plique-a-jour bowl originates from the late 19th century during the Meiji period. It is formed from vitreous enamel and silver, displaying a vibrant green and white colour palette with delicate silver wire framework outlining translucent cells. The bowl is decorated with a detailed cherry blossom design incorporating a prunus branch motif and yellow centres to the flowers, finished with a silver rim. The translucent green glaze allows light to pass through the patterned walls. The piece measures 4 cm high and 8 cm wide. In a modern interior, this decorative bowl suits placement on a deep window sill where natural light can illuminate the translucent enamel panels. It also fits well on a desk, side table or cabinet surface within a living room, conservatory or hallway as a standalone display object. The compact form makes it practical for small display spaces while adding floral motifs and colour to the room.

Plique-a-jour enamel, known in Japan as shotai-jippo, is a vitreous enamelling technique where enamel is applied into cell work without a permanent metal backing, creating a stained-glass effect when light passes through. The technique gained prominence in Japan during the late Meiji period under the influence of master enamellers who adapted European glass and metalworking methods.

Artisans build these vessels by applying silver wires onto a temporary base metal body, such as copper, to form design cells. Translucent vitreous enamel pastes are filled into the cells and fired multiple times before the copper base is etched away with acid, leaving an unbacked enamel structure held purely by thin silver wires and metal rims.

Authentic Japanese pieces feature exceptionally precise wirework, polished surfaces without pitted air bubbles, and traditional naturalistic motifs such as prunus blossoms or foliage. They typically display clear, uniform translucency across all cells and finished silver rims along the top and base edges.

Position the bowl near a natural light source to showcase its light-transmitting qualities. Its compact scale and vibrant green tones make it suitable for display on polished wooden surfaces, marble mantelpieces, or glass shelving units alongside minimalist decorative objects.

Dust the item gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid immersing it in water or using abrasive chemical cleaners that could weaken the solder joints. Keep the bowl away from direct heat sources and handle it with extreme care, as unbacked glass enamel is brittle and susceptible to cracking upon impact.
