Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian burr walnut baby Sutherland table belongs to the mid Victorian period in a classic English Country House style. Constructed from warm brown burr walnut, walnut, brass, and ceramic, the piece displays a bookmatched veneered figured oval top with a moulded edge and two drop leaves, supported by dual turned column supports, a stretcher, and carved cabriole legs terminating in white ceramic castors set in original brass fixings. The wood exhibits a rich colour and original patina. The table stands 59.5 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 33 cm deep when closed, with open dimensions measuring 61 cm by 76 cm. In a modern home, this compact occasional table serves effectively at the end of a sofa or in a snug as a convenient surface for drinks or books.

FAQs

A Sutherland table is a mid-19th century British drop-leaf table style defined by its narrow central top section and deep side flaps. Named after Harriet, Duchess of Sutherland, these compact tables feature gate-leg or swing-out leg mechanisms designed to save space when collapsed.

Victorian Sutherland tables were frequently constructed using solid walnut frame elements faced with figured burr walnut veneers, mahogany, or rosewood. Structural components include hand-turned twin support pillars, carved cabriole feet, a central stretcher rail, and ceramic castors.

Authentic 19th-century examples display period-appropriate details such as original brass gate hinges, natural hand-cut wood joinery, white ceramic wheel castors, and genuine burr timber figure. The drop-leaf joints typically feature precision hand-milled rule joints.

Due to its narrow footprint when folded, a baby Sutherland table functions as an occasional side table beside a sofa, between armchairs, or within a hallway alcove. The hinged drop leaves allow the top surface to expand when additional space is required.

Burr walnut surface finishes should be protected by applying a quality beeswax polish along the wood grain twice yearly. Keep timber veneers away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity fluctuations, and hot or damp objects to prevent lifting or cracking.
