This Georgian antique firearm is an 18th-century flintlock blunderbuss constructed from Italian rosewood and steel. The dark brown wooden stock possesses a contoured shape that tapers toward a flared muzzle at the barrel end, paired with a curved metal trigger guard and an exposed flintlock mechanism alongside a delicate trigger. The timber displays natural grain variations with polished surfaces across the long stock, while the metal components show typical patination of the period. Dimensions measure 16 cm high, 70 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. Suitable for placement in a gentleman's library, this piece sits well displayed on brackets above the mantel as a decorative wall hanging or within a dedicated display cabinet.

FAQs

A blunderbuss is a short, large-calibre firearm featuring a distinctive flared muzzle, widely used during the 17th and 18th centuries for naval defence, military force, and protection on stagecoaches.

Traditional blunderbusses were constructed using dense hardwoods such as walnut or oak for the shaped stock, paired with hand-forged steel flintlock mechanisms and barrels crafted from steel, iron, or brass.

Authentic period firearms exhibit hand-forged lock plates, period proof marks stamped into the barrel, period-appropriate brass or steel fittings, and natural oxidation consistent with age.

An antique firearm serves as an architectural accent when mounted horizontally above a fireplace mantelpiece, integrated into a library wall display, or positioned within a framed glazed cabinet.

Keep the item in a stable humidity environment, apply microcrystalline wax to metal elements to prevent oxidisation, and use neutral beeswax paste to nourish the wooden stock without stripping historic patina.
