This George III mahogany two-tier bedside table dates from circa 1790. The piece displays a warm brown timber colour with a polished finish, constructed with an open middle shelf, a single lower drawer fitted with a central circular brass knob, square straight legs, and decorative corner spandrel brackets beneath the upper tier. The bedside table measures 78 cm high, 35.5 cm wide, and 35.5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this compact item serves well in a bedroom as a traditional bedside stand for a lamp and night-time essentials, or functions equally effectively in a living space as a lamp table or small display surface positioned beside a sofa or in a hallway corner.

Originating in late 18th-century Britain, George III bedside tables were designed with utility and classical proportion in mind. Often incorporating open tiers, small drawers, or enclosed cupboards, these pieces showcase the straight lines and functional elegance characteristic of Georgian cabinetmaking.

These tables were constructed primarily from dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its rich grain and stability. Secondary timbers such as pine or oak were typically used for drawer linings, complemented by cast brass handles or knobs.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction, hand-sawn secondary wood linings, and period-correct brass hardware. Natural shrinkage marks along timber joins and evidence of historic hand-planing further indicate genuine age.

A two-tier table can serve beside a modern bed frame or function as an end table alongside a sofa. The open tier provides storage space for books or magazines, while the top tier accommodates a table lamp.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish sparingly to maintain the original finish. Position the furniture away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent timber movement or fading.
