This early Victorian breakfast dining table dates from around 1840. Constructed from mahogany, it has a warm brown timber colour with visible dark flecks in the grain and a polished finish. The circular top sits on a central pedestal column with a carved segmented gadrooned collar. Below this, the table features an unusual lobed platform base raised on four carved scroll feet with brass castors. The top measures 128.5 cm wide and the table stands 72.5 cm high. Suitable for use as a central breakfast dining table, it functions well in a dining room or a large living space for daily meals and gatherings. The top can be tipped to a vertical position when not in use.

A mahogany breakfast table is a nineteenth-century circular or oval dining table designed with a central pedestal base. Often featuring a tilt-top mechanism, these tables were created to facilitate informal dining and could be moved or tilted against a wall to clear space in period reception rooms.

Victorian breakfast tables were predominantly constructed using solid timber and rich veneers such as flame mahogany, rosewood, or oak. The structural elements included brass tilt-latch mechanisms and original brass castors mounted under carved timber feet.

Authentic pieces from around 1840 demonstrate hand-carved joinery, hand-turned pedestals, and period-appropriate brass hardware. Look for natural oxidation on the underside of the timber, heavy solid timber bases, and flame mahogany veneers applied over stable hardwood cores.

A circular mahogany table functions effectively as a dining centerpiece or a foyer table. Pairing dark mahogany timber with modern upholstered dining chairs or minimalist modern lighting creates a balanced contrast between contemporary design and period architecture.

Keep mahogany furniture away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage and veneer movement. Apply high-quality beeswax polish periodically along the direction of the grain, avoiding silicone-based sprays.
