This pair of antique Regency tea tables dates from the grand Regency period and is rendered in rich dark brown mahogany timber with gleaming brass castors. Each piece features a D-shaped fold-over top above a reeded frieze, supported by slender turned tapering legs that terminate in small brass castors. The timber displays a warm patina with subtle grain variation across the polished surfaces. Measuring 71 cm high, 91 cm wide and 44.5 cm deep, these versatile console surfaces function well in a hallway beside the front door or as serving tables in a dining room. Traditional proportions and clean classical lines allow these items to sit comfortably within both period interiors and contemporary homes. The folding leaves open to expand the surface area when required for entertaining or display purposes. Solid craftsmanship and enduring materials ensure these tables provide practical everyday utility while adding architectural interest to living spaces. Each piece stands independently or functions as a matched pair to create a balanced focal point against a wall.

FAQs

A Regency tea table is a piece of English furniture produced in the early nineteenth century, specifically designed with a fold-over top. When closed, it sits against a wall as a console or side table, and when opened, it provides a surface for serving tea or social entertaining.

These tables were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers. Common structural details include hand-cut dovetail joints, reeded or turned tapering legs, rotating top mechanisms, and brass socket castors.

Authentic Regency pieces feature hand-planed secondary timbers like oak or pine, original brass castors, hand-cut hinges, and natural patination on the mahogany timber. The underside often displays expected age-related shrinkage marks and historic cabinetmaker markings.

A pair of Regency tea tables can be placed symmetrically flanking a doorway, hallway, or fireplace to act as console tables. Their warm wood tone pairs well with modern art, minimal lamps, and structured floral arrangements.

Maintain mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a clear natural beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage, cracking, or fading of the finish.
