This mid-nineteenth-century French table a gibier game table dates from around 1860 and follows a French Country style. The piece pairs a dark brown timber base with a red and grey veined marble top. The heavy stone slab sits above a structured wooden underframe supported by four heavily turned legs with bulbous lower sections. A low central stretcher connects the upright supports, terminating in shaped trestle feet at floor level. The timber displays a rich dark brown polish and visible grain throughout the turned sections and base supports. Measuring 73 cm in height and 85.5 cm in width, the table offers a compact surface suitable for placement beside the front door or in a hallway as an occasional side table. The sturdy surface accommodates a lamp, keys or decorative ornaments in a traditional or transitional interior scheme. The combination of cold stone and warm timber brings textural contrast to an entryway, living room or corridor setting.

Originating in 18th and 19th-century France, a table a gibier (literally game table) was traditionally a marble-topped table used in country residences for preparing game after hunting. Over time, these pieces evolved into decorative side tables and consoles prized for their sturdy construction and stone tops.

These tables typically combine a thick slab of natural marble, such as Rouge Royale or Breccia, with a solid timber frame crafted from oak, walnut, or beech. The wooden bases feature hand-turned legs, stretchers, and sturdy trestle feet to support the weight of the stone surface.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved joinery, hand-turned leg details, and natural signs of age on the timber underside. The heavy marble slab often exhibits hand-chiselled edging or historic surface wear, and typically rests directly on the wooden frame without modern adhesives.

This table type serves as an entryway console table, an occasional side table beside armchairs, or a serving surface in a dining room. Placing minimalist ceramic vessels or modern artwork above the dark turned timber and rich marble creates an engaging dialogue between contemporary design and historic craftsmanship.

Dust the wooden base regularly with a dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually to maintain the timber. Clean the marble top using warm water and pH-neutral soap, wiping spills immediately to prevent liquid from penetrating the porous stone.
