This taxidermy otter mask hunt trophy dates to the 1920 period of British sporting taxidermy. The piece is formed of warm brown fur with dark glass eyes and an open snarl showing teeth, mounted in profile on a shield-shaped oak plaque with a moulded edge. Below the head sits a cream-coloured engraved ivorine plate carrying the hunt details. The taxidermy work originates from the firm H. Murray & Son of Carnforth, founded in 1872. In a home today, this wall mount suits a narrow wall space to bring a Highland hunting lodge style to a study, hallway, or living room. The dark timber grain of the shield contrasts with the lighter fur of the animal head, while the visible screws on the mount and the text on the small plaque add historical character.

An otter mask trophy is a preserved head mount of an otter, prepared by professional taxidermists following historical British sporting activities, mounted onto a shaped wooden shield plaque.

Historic taxidermy mounts were constructed using carved wood or papier-mache skull forms, glass eyes, polished oak or mahogany backing shields, and inscribed brass or ivorine caption plates.

Authentic pieces feature naturally aged timber plaques, period-correct glass eyes, hand-lettered or engraved detail plates, and occasionally maker labels stamped on the reverse side of the shield.

These historical wall mounts are typically integrated into gallery walls, dark academic study spaces, or positioned in entryways alongside dark wood panelling and classic furnishings.

Keep preserved taxidermy in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight and dampness, dusting the fur gently with a dry soft brush along the natural direction of the coat.
