This Victorian games table dates from the late 19th century and is made from warm brown walnut with an inlaid chessboard top. The oval top measures 91 cm by 53 cm, with a height of 71 cm, providing a practical surface for everyday games or display in a home. The piece rests on carved cabriole feet and turned end supports, which are joined together by a turned central stretcher beneath the table. In a contemporary interior, this table finds a natural home in a bay window or a gentleman's library. The timber displays a small amount of light bruising on the surface, which remains barely noticeable and consistent with age. The wood exhibits varied light and dark tones across the inlaid chess squares and the surrounding grain, complemented by moulded edges along the oval top and traditional carved details on the legs.

A Victorian chess top table is an occasional table featuring an integrated inlaid board designed for playing chess or draughts. Popular in 19th-century drawing rooms, these tables combined functional gameplay with decorative cabinet making.

Late 19th-century games tables were commonly constructed from solid walnut or mahogany with contrasting wood marquetry for the chessboard squares. Construction techniques involved hand-cut joinery, turned stretchers, and carved legs.

Authentic late 19th-century examples display hand-inlaid veneer squares rather than printed patterns, natural age-related patination, and timber movement along joinery lines. Look for hand-turned legs, original fixings, and traditional hand-carved detailing.

Position the table in a reading nook, bay window, or alongside an armchair to create a dedicated leisure zone. Pair it with an accent lamp and wooden chess pieces to highlight its functional purpose.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply high-quality beeswax twice yearly to protect the finish. Avoid direct sunlight, radiator heat sources, and excess moisture to prevent warping or bleaching of the timber inlay.
