A nineteenth-century French Neoclassical side table in giltwood and marble stands on four fluted column legs with carved roundels, supporting a circular white marble top above a carved frieze and a concave lower stretcher. The wooden surfaces display a distressed gold finish with visible wear, chipping along the edges of the top, and lighter wood tones showing through the aged gilt. Carved floral rosettes decorate the upper corners of the legs, and the turned feet rest on the floor below the lower shelf. Measuring 75 cm high, 41 cm wide, and 41 cm deep, this piece fits easily beside an armchair or at the end of a sofa in a living room, hallway, or bedroom. The compact circular footprint provides a convenient surface for a lamp, small vase, or book in domestic interiors.

FAQs

Originating in France, a gueridon is a small circular occasional table supported by columns or legs, often featuring giltwood finishes and a marble top inspired by classical antiquity.

These tables typically feature hand-carved hardwood or softwood frames finished with water gilding over a gesso base, often topped with imported white or grey-veined marble slabs.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved joinery, natural wear through the gilding revealing the underlying reddish bole clay layer, and subtle variations within hand-cut marble tops.

Position the piece alongside contemporary upholstered seating as an accent table, using the contrast between classical gilded detail and clean modern lines to create visual balance.

Dust the giltwood gently with a soft dry brush avoiding water or chemical polishes that strip gilding, and wipe the marble surface immediately with a damp cloth if spills occur.
