Victorian Corkscrew with Silver Plated Caps C1880

19th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A very fine Victorian corkscrew dating to c.1880.

It has a turned and polished wooden T-handle fitted with silver-plated end caps. The steel shank leads to a hand-forged worm of generous proportion, designed to provide a secure grip within the cork whilst reducing the risk of breakage during extraction.

This is a classic late Victorian example, combining practicality with elegant design. Corkscrews of this form were commonly found in well-appointed households, hotels and gentlemen's clubs during the latter part of the 19th century. The contrasting combination of polished wood, silver-plated mounts and forged steel creates an attractive and highly functional piece of antique barware.

Date & Origin

England, c.1880, Period of Queen Victoria.

Condition

A fine example. The wooden handle is in very good condition with an attractive colour and patina developed through age and use. The silver-plated end caps display a few minor dings and marks consistent with age. The worm remains strong and serviceable.

Dimensions

Length: 13 cm

Additional Notes

The worm is unusually broad and deeply cut, a feature often associated with better-quality Victorian corkscrews as it allowed a firmer purchase on the cork and reduced the likelihood of tearing during extraction.

Declaration

Exhibit Antiques has dated this Victorian Silver Plated Corkscrew to the Victorian era.

Victorian direct-pull corkscrews feature a basic T-shaped design requiring manual tension to extract a cork from a bottle. Manufactured extensively during the nineteenth century, these pieces relied on simple mechanical leverage rather than complex geared or compound mechanism designs.

Handles were commonly crafted from polished natural materials such as horn, bone, mother-of-pearl, and dense hardwoods like ebony or oak. The structural helix and shank were forged from steel, frequently trimmed with decorative silver-plated caps or brass collars.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-turned or forged steel worms showing signs of period fabrication, along with natural material handles displaying age-appropriate surface wear. Maker marks, registry stamps, or metal purity hallmarks on collars and caps also indicate authenticity.

An antique corkscrew can be displayed on a tray alongside contemporary glassware on a dining room sideboard or bar cart. It functions effectively as a decorative accent within a curated display of vintage bar tools or historical curiosities.

Dust steel and metal components regularly with a dry cloth and apply light mineral oil to protect the steel worm against oxidisation and rust. Avoid immersing natural materials like horn or wood in water, cleaning metal end caps gently with a soft cloth intended for silver plate.
