This American Civil War wrist breaker sabre dates to the 19th-century military period of 1860. The piece comprises a curved steel blade housed in a black metal scabbard with a double-ring setup, complemented by a brass three-branch handguard and a ribbed leather-wrapped grip. The brass elements exhibit a warm golden metallic finish against the polished black surfaces of the scabbard and hilt wrap, while the clean metal hardware displays a well-maintained overall presentation. Measuring 111 cm in length with a width across guards of 12 cm and a depth of 10 cm, this historical military weapon sits prominently as a focal point in a gentleman's library. It mounts securely above the mantel on a display bracket, bringing a martial aesthetic to traditional study spaces and home offices.

FAQs

The Model 1840 cavalry sabre was a heavy, single-edged sword utilised by United States cavalry units during the mid-19th century, including the American Civil War. It earned the nickname wrist breaker due to its substantial weight, heavy blade, and rigid brass guard construction.

These sabres typically featured forged carbon steel blades, brass hilts with multi-branch handguards, and leather-wrapped wooden grips bound with brass wire. The accompanying scabbards were constructed from heavy sheet steel, often finished in dark lacquer or browned steel to prevent corrosion.

Authentic period sabres display inspector stamps, manufacturer markings, and manufacture dates near the ricasso of the blade. Original pieces feature cast brass guards showing natural age patina, wire-wrapped leather handles showing historic wear, and steel scabbards with forged suspension rings.

An antique sabre is best presented mounted horizontally on custom brass or timber wall brackets above a mantelpiece or desk. It can also be integrated into custom cabinetry or framed shadow boxes within study or library settings.

Steel blades require periodic application of microcrystalline wax to prevent oxidisation and rust. Brass hilts should be left unpolished to preserve historical patina, while leather components should be kept in humidity-controlled environments to prevent drying or cracking.
