A Fine Nymphenburg Porcelain Figure of a Reclining Great Dane by Theodor Kärner

Designed by the distinguished German sculptor Theodor Kärner (1884–1966) in the early 20th century, the figure depicts a Great Dane resting with its head lowered, its long, slender forelegs extended and its tail gracefully curved around its hindquarters.

The exceptionally sensitive modelling captures both the strength and elegance of the breed.

This Nymphenburg porcelain figure depicts a reclining Great Dane designed in the Art Deco style from 1930. The hard-paste porcelain sculpture has a smooth glazed finish in taupe grey with darker shading around the muzzle and ears, naturalistic modelling showing the musculature and skeletal structure, and an underglaze painted decoration. The dog rests with its head lowered, its long slender forelegs extended straight forward, and its tail curved around its hindquarters. Measuring 24 cm wide, the piece serves as a decorative accent for a gentleman's library or a sideboard top. The underside bears the impressed Nymphenburg factory shield, model number 151, and painted initials.

The Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory, established in Bavaria in 1747, became renowned for its high-quality ceramic production. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the manufactory gained distinction for its naturalistic animal sculptures modelled by celebrated artists who studied live subjects.

Fine porcelain figurines are made from hard-paste porcelain, composed of kaolin, feldspar, and quartz. After initial shaping and drying, the pieces are painted with underglaze pigments and fired at elevated temperatures to achieve a durable, glossy vitrified surface.

Authentic pieces typically feature the manufactorys impressed crest, known as the Rautenschild (a diamond-patterned shield mark), stamped directly into the porcelain paste. They also frequently bear impressed model numbers and artist initials along the base.

A porcelain sculpture of this scale works well as a focal point on a mantelpiece, console table, or embedded within a bookshelf arrangement. Pairing ceramic figures with natural textures like dark wood or leather balances the glossy sheen of the glazed glaze.

Dust porcelain objects regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled artist brush. For deeper cleaning, wipe gently with a damp cloth using warm water and a mild detergent, avoiding submersion or abrasive chemical cleansers.
