This early 20th century gavel originates from South Africa and is made from dark brown hardwood with a rounded head and a turned handle featuring decorative ring moulding details. A silver presentation band is attached to the head with small screws and carries an inscription relating to a Reverend Allen Lea, Chairman of the Queenstown District in 1928, presented by native ministers. The piece is in very good condition with no mention of damage. Measuring 18 cm in height, the object is compact and suitable for display on an office desk within a gentleman's library setting. It functions well as a decorative desk accessory or a ceremonial piece for a study or home workspace.

Gavels have long served as symbols of authority and order in legal, parliamentary, and fraternal contexts. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, presentation gavels were frequently awarded to commemorate appointments, retirements, or significant organizational milestones.

Antique gavels were typically crafted from dense, durable hardwoods such as ebony, rosewood, oak, or mahogany to withstand impact. Ceremonial or commemorative examples often incorporate silver, nickel, or brass bandings inscribed with details of the presentation.

Authentic period gavels display natural age-related wear, such as patination to the wood and metal oxidisation. Hallmarks or maker stamps on silver mounts, period typography on engraved plaques, and hand-turned woodworking details help confirm age and provenance.

A presentation gavel serves as a compelling conversation piece when arranged on an office desk, a gentlemans library bookcase, or a mantelpiece. Placing it alongside leather-bound books, brass instruments, or framed prints complements classic study decor.

Keep the gavel in a dry environment away from direct heat sources to prevent the wood from cracking or shrinking. Dust the timber with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply microcrystalline wax sparingly; clean silver bands gently with a specialised silver cloth without applying harsh chemical pastes to adjacent wood.
