Regency Rosewood & Ormolu Book Carrier, Early 19th Century

19th century
Description

A Charming And Very Fine Quality Early 19th Century Regency Period Rosewood Desk Top Book Carrier, Having Superbly Figured Rectangular Base, Surrounded On Three Sides By Very Attractive Pierced Ormolu Gallery Of Gothic Trellis Design, The Two Ends Surmounted By Elegant Scrolling Supports Incorporating Carrying Handles.

The combination of beautifully figured rosewood and finely worked ormolu makes this a particularly attractive example, with the unusual Gothic inspired gallery adding considerably to its decorative appeal. Designed originally for keeping books neatly organised and close to hand, whilst allowing them to be carried conveniently from one place to another, it remains an extremely practical and decorative accessory for a desk, library table or occasional table.

The rosewood retains a lovely rich colour and surface, with the usual old marks, scuffs and minor imperfections associated with age and use, all blending in nicely. The ormolu also retains an attractive mellow colour and patination.

The piece has been attended to in our workshops by our skilled traditional antique furniture restorers, receiving an appropriate natural wax polish, and is now ready to place in the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency period desk accessories from the early 19th century feature classical proportions, figure-rich wood veneers such as rosewood, and decorative gilt-bronze or brass mounts known as ormolu. These functional items were designed for libraries and private studies, reflecting the literary culture of the era.

Traditional Regency book carriers were constructed using solid timber bases veneered with highly figured woods such as Brazilian rosewood or mahogany. The metalwork typically consisted of cast brass or fire-gilt bronze gallery rails and handles, assembled with recessed screws.

Authentic early 19th-century pieces exhibit signs of period craftsmanship, including hand-sawn veneers, natural oxidisation on original brass fittings, and slight wood movement over time. Authentic ormolu from this era displays a soft, aged finish rather than uniform bright modern gilding.

A Regency book carrier functions as a focal point on an office desk, console table, or coffee table to store bound volumes, stationery, or books. Its warm timber tones and metallic gallery contrast effectively with contemporary surfaces.

Dust the rosewood regularly with a soft dry microfibre cloth and apply a beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the timber finish. Avoid harsh liquid cleaners on the brass or ormolu mounts, gently wiping metal components with a soft dry brush to preserve the historic patina.
