This eighteenth-century Chinese Chippendale side table is constructed from dark brown mahogany and stands in a classic English Country House style. The rectangular top sits above a single frieze drawer, which is fitted with an original brass swan-neck handle mounted on shaped backplates and edged with fine stringing decoration. The solid framework is supported by square Marlborough legs linked to the frieze by curved corner spandrel brackets, showing honest surface wear consistent with age and use. The table measures 700 cm high, 720 cm wide, and 450 cm deep. Practical and versatile, the piece suits placement at the end of a sofa in a living room, drawing room, or hallway to hold a lamp, books, or decorative objects. The dark timber finish harmonises easily with traditional and transitional interior schemes, providing a functional surface with period character. Its clean lines and restrained proportions ensure it integrates neatly into a range of domestic settings while retaining its historic appeal.

Chippendale side tables, originating in mid-to-late 18th-century England, are noted for their rich mahogany timber, straight Marlborough legs or cabriole legs, simple moulded tops, and subtle decorative corner spandrels.

These tables were typically crafted from solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany, featuring secondary timbers like oak or pine for drawer linings, secured with hand-cut dovetail joints and fitted with cast brass handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of period craftsmanship, including hand-sawn timber marks, uneven hand-cut dovetails, secondary oak drawer linings, historic brass hardware, and uneven oxidisation or wax patination underneath.

A Georgian side table works well as an accent piece alongside upholstered sofas, as a nightstand in a bedroom, or within an entryway framed by contemporary artwork and a modern table lamp.

Regularly dust the surface using a soft microfibre cloth, apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish along the grain once or twice a year, and position the piece away from direct sunlight or heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
