Antique Rauenstein German Porcelain Shepherd & Shepherdess Figures C1900

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique German Rauenstein Porcelain Shepherd & Shepherdess Figurines – Rococo Revival – Circa 1900

A charming and beautifully detailed pair of antique German porcelain figures depicting a Shepherd and Shepherdess, produced by the renowned Rauenstein Porcelain Factory of Thuringia, Germany, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.

Modelled in the romantic Rococo Revival style, this delightful pastoral couple displays the fine craftsmanship, delicate colouring and decorative appeal associated with quality German porcelain of the period.

The Shepherdess is elegantly dressed in a colourful floral-patterned skirt, fitted bodice and straw hat adorned with a flower. She holds a shepherd's crook, with a charming little lamb resting at her feet.

Her companion, the Shepherd, is equally well modelled, wearing a rich dark blue coat, striped breeches and wide-brimmed black hat. He carries a walking staff and holds open a feeding bag, completing this appealing rural scene.

Both figures stand upon decorative circular bases embellished with delicate applied porcelain flowers and finely gilded Greek key borders, adding a further touch of refinement.

The undersides bear the underglaze blue 'R' factory mark associated with Rauenstein, together with impressed or incised model numbers.

A particularly attractive and decorative pair of antique Continental porcelain figurines, ideal for display in a cabinet, on a mantelpiece or as part of a collection of German porcelain, Dresden-style figures or Victorian decorative ceramics.

A delightful matched pair with wonderful period charm, intricate detailing and timeless decorative appeal.

Pastoral porcelain figures originated in 18th-century Europe as romanticised representations of rural life, shepherdesses, and rustic romantic scenes. Highly popularised by Meissen and adopted across Thuringian factories like Rauenstein, these figures reflected Neoclassical and Rococo interests in idealized nature.

These figures were cast using hard-paste porcelain kaolin clay, fired at extremely high temperatures, and individually hand-painted with overglaze enamel colours before receiving gilded metallic leaf highlights and a final protective glaze firing.

Authentic late 19th and early 20th-century German figures typically feature impressed or underglaze factory marks on the unglazed underside, visible hand-painted moulding seams, crisp detail in garment folds, and age-appropriate wear to gold leaf trims.

Pastoral porcelain figures can be displayed as a symmetrical pair on a fireplace mantelpiece, integrated into a curated bookshelf vignette, or placed inside a glazed display cabinet against contemporary minimalist backdrops to provide historical contrast.

Dust figures gently with a dry, soft-bristled artist brush to prevent catching delicate hands or staffs. Avoid submersing in water or using abrasive chemical cleaners, as moisture can compromise delicate overglaze enamel painting and gilding.
