This Chinese blue and white Kraak dish dates from the seventeenth-century Wanli period and originates from the Ming Dynasty style. The circular porcelain vessel has a foliate rim and displays underglaze cobalt blue decoration in a traditional colour palette of dark blue and white. The interior features a central star-shaped panel enclosing a landscape with an insect, surrounded by a panelled border containing flowers and precious objects. The exterior rim is painted with scrolling flowers, and the base carries a crossed square mark along with a hairline fracture on the edge running into the plate. Measuring 21 cm in diameter, this decorative plate sits well on a sideboard top to bring an authentic English Country House feel to an interior setting.

Kraak ware is a type of Chinese export porcelain produced primarily during the late Ming dynasty, specifically during the Wanli reign (15731620), characterised by its distinctive panelled border decoration and underglaze blue painted motifs.

Kraak porcelain was crafted using high-fired kaolin clay and decorated with cobalt blue pigment under a clear glaze, frequently featuring thin potting, a barbed or foliate rim, and grit adhering to the unglazed foot rim from kiln firing.

Authentic period pieces typically exhibit radial chatter marks on the reverse, kiln grit baked into the foot rim, fine glaze flaking along the rim edge, and segmented panel borders surrounding a central landscape or floral reserve.

A Kraak dish can be mounted on a wall bracket within a gallery grouping, positioned on a brass display stand atop a sideboard, or housed within a glazed cabinet to introduce historic pattern contrast to contemporary spaces.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild, neutral soap with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh abrasive cleaners, chemical agents, or immersion in hot water that could compromise historical glaze surfaces.
