A 19th Century Mahogany Tilt-top Tripod Table

19th century
Description

A 19th Century Mahogany Tilt-Top Tripod Table. c1860

A charming early 19th-century mahogany tilt-top occasional table, retaining a wonderfully rich, dark colour and attractive aged patina.

The circular, planked top displays a pleasing depth of colour, with the natural grain of the timber and evidence of many years of use adding considerably to its character.

Raised on an elegant turned baluster pedestal, terminating in three boldly shaped cabriole legs with out-swept feet, giving the table a particularly attractive and well-balanced silhouette.

The original-style tilt-top mechanism allows the top to be raised vertically when not in use, making this a practical and versatile piece of occasional furniture.

Of pleasingly modest proportions, this table would work equally well beside an armchair, in a drawing room, library or entrance hall, complementing both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Condition: Good antique country-house condition, small surface wear and a particularly attractive, time-worn patina, all consistent with its age and use.

This nineteenth-century occasional table consists of a circular dark brown mahogany top mounted on a central turned pedestal and three cabriole legs with out-swept feet. The solid timber shows a natural grain, a warm aged patina, surface wear from years of use, and a visible planked construction. A functioning tilt-top mechanism allows the surface to lift vertically when the table is not in use. The table measures 70 cm high, 69 cm wide, and 69 cm deep, offering practical dimensions for everyday living spaces. Placed beside an armchair in a drawing room, library, or entrance hall, the piece functions effectively as a side table for drinks, books, or small decorative items. It fits naturally into both traditional and contemporary interiors, bringing classic English country house character to any room layout while remaining entirely functional for daily tasks.

Originating in the 18th century, tilt-top tripod tables feature a circular top mounted on a central pillar with three curved legs, designed with a latch mechanism allowing the top to tilt vertically for space-saving storage against a wall when not in use.

These tables were typically crafted from solid woods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, featuring turned central balusters, dovetail joints securing the legs to the pillar base, and brass or iron catch mechanisms beneath the table top.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-cut brass or iron tilt latches, age-appropriate wear on the underside of the table top, natural shrinkage along the timber grain, and hand-fitted dovetails where the legs join the central pedestal.

A tilt-top table serves as an occasional side table beside an armchair or sofa, and can be tilted vertically in a room corner to display timber grain as a decorative background feature.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth, protect the finish from direct sunlight and heat sources, and apply a beeswax polish once or twice a year following the natural grain of the timber.
