This Georgian framed textile comprises an 18th-century Spitalfields silk panel set within a dark rosewood veneer frame. The cream taffeta ground displays a botanical floral pattern with green lampas leaves and brocaded blossoms in coral, terracotta, blue, ochre and purple, finished with antique silver braid at the top and bottom borders. The rectangular timber frame features mitered corners and visible wood grain variations. The panel measures 107.5 cm high by 51.5 cm wide. Position this piece on a narrow wall space within an English country house interior, such as a hallway, alcove or study. It hangs vertically as a decorative wall hanging to introduce historical textile interest and colour to traditional living areas or bedrooms.

Spitalfields silk refers to luxury woven textiles manufactured in the Spitalfields area of East London during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, predominantly by French Huguenot refugee weavers who brought advanced silk-weaving techniques to England.

Georgian silk weaving utilised imported raw silk threads, often dyed with natural pigments, and was constructed using drawlooms to produce complex brocades, damasks, and patterned dress and furnishing fabrics.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-loomed selvages, natural dye variations, eighteenth-century botanical motifs, and characteristic structural weaving techniques such as brocaded float threads on the reverse.

Framed silk fragments function as understated wall art, suitable for hanging in hallways, above sideboards, or integrated into gallery walls alongside period prints and oil paintings.

Historic silk should be mounted onto acid-free support boards using conservation-grade framing behind UV-filtering glass, and kept out of direct sunlight and high-humidity areas to prevent degradation.
