An orphrey panel is an embroidered band or panel traditionally applied to Christian ecclesiastical vestments such as chasubles, copes, and dalmatics. They featured detailed figural scenes, saints, or heraldic symbols rendered in needlework to enrich liturgical garments.

Historically, orphreys were crafted using silk, linen, and metallic threads made of gilt-silver or gold wrapped around a silk core. Techniques included couching for metal threads and split stitch or silk shading for detailed human features and drapery.

Authentic pieces display characteristic physical age, including natural oxidisation of metal threads, hand-spun linen or silk foundations, and subtle colour fading on exposed surfaces. Construction marks, split-stitch detail, and evidence of removal from an original vestment ground also indicate age.

Framed textile panels are commonly mounted on neutral background fabrics to highlight their silhouette and displayed as individual accent pieces or integrated into gallery walls. They pair well with dark timber furniture, brass accents, and structured contemporary art.

Ecclesiastical needlework requires conservation framing behind UV-filtering glass with acid-free mounting boards. Direct sunlight, high humidity, and chemical surface cleaning must be avoided to prevent thread degradation and colour shifting.
