An orphrey panel is a decorative embroidered band traditionally applied to Christian vestments, such as chasubles, copes, and dalmatics. Originating in the medieval period, these panels feature intricate figure work and sacred symbolism crafted using couched metal threads and silk.

Historic ecclesiastical embroideries were created using fine silk threads, linen backing fabrics, and precious metal threads made from gilt silver or gold wrapped around a silk core. These panels were frequently mounted onto silk damask or silk velvet bases.

Authentic period needlework displays irregular hand-stitching on the reverse, natural oxidisation of metallic threads, and uneven surface wear consistent with age. Technique markers include underside couching and delicate split stitch work in facial features.

Framed antique textiles provide rich textural contrast when displayed in contemporary spaces. Position vertical panels in narrow wall alcoves, entryways, or alongside modern linear furniture to create a curated, gallery-style aesthetic.

Mount embroidered textiles behind UV-filtering glass with acid-free backing materials to prevent atmospheric degradation. Display away from direct sunlight, radiators, and areas with high humidity to preserve thread integrity and fabric colours.
