1900 - 1920
Description

A good example of side and lamp tables commissioned by Liberty & Co of London and made in a variety of fruitwoods for them, in Japan between 1885 and 1905. Each piece was hand carved and thus ‘unique’. Sometimes referred to as ‘Flower Tables’ the top, under tier and upper legs are all heavily carved with attractive flower and leaf motifs. There are marks and inscription under the top which possibly identify the carver and the design reference, as well as assembly numbers, as these tables were shipped in component parts from Japan and assembled in England.

This Anglo-Japanese side table originates from the period around 1900, commissioned by Liberty & Co and made in Japan from carved hardwood with a warm brown finish. The two-tier piece stands on four curved splayed legs with carved botanical motifs, featuring heavy relief-carved leaf patterns across the rectangular tabletop and lower shelf, plus a visible central support strut beneath the lower shelf. Practical measurements are 71 cm high, 75 cm wide, and 50 cm deep. Position this side table at the end of a sofa in a gentleman's library or living room to hold lamps, books, or decorative objects. The compact proportions and versatile surface area make it a functional addition to a variety of interior schemes while providing convenient extra display space.

Anglo-Japanese furniture emerged in Britain during the late nineteenth century, influenced by the opening of Japanese trade ports and the Aesthetic Movement. Retailers such as Liberty & Co. imported and commissioned carved hardwood pieces featuring traditional Japanese motifs tailored for Western domestic spaces.

These tables were typically constructed from dense hardwoods, such as keyaki, cherrywood, or imported teak. The surfaces were hand-carved with botanical and organic patterns before being finished with dark stains or clear lacquers.

Authentic pieces feature shallow or high-relief hand carvings with naturalistic motifs like chrysanthemums or iris leaves. Look for signs of period joinery, authentic surface patina in recessed areas, and occasional retailer stamps or paper labels under the tabletop.

Position the table beside a modern armchair or sofa to create textural contrast against plain upholstery. The intricate relief carving works best when paired with minimalist decor, allowing the carved wood texture to serve as a focal accent.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth or a soft bristle brush to reach carved recesses. Apply high-grade natural beeswax sparingly once or twice a year, avoiding placement near direct heat sources or damp environments.
