This French Empire plant stand dates from the 19th century in a French Chateau style. The two-tiered piece consists of giltwood, cane, and zinc materials with a gold colour. The structure is decorated with carved laurel leaf wreaths and swags, fluted column supports, caned panels, and a lower trough holding a removable zinc liner patched with lead. Signs of age include faded gilding and slight wear on one of the feet, while the cane work remains intact and the overall stand is sturdy. The dimensions measure 78 cm high, 40 cm wide, and 30 cm deep. It fits well in a bay window in a home today to hold plants and flowers.

FAQs

Originating during the early 19th century, French Empire furniture is characterised by classical proportions, symmetrical forms, and motifs inspired by ancient Roman and Greek decoration, frequently executed in dark woods or giltwood.

These decorative plant stands were typically constructed from carved timber with water-gilded surfaces, woven cane panels, and fitted metal zinc or lead liners designed to protect the wooden frame from moisture.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, age-related wear to the gilding that reveals underlying red bole or white gesso, original metal trough liners, and hand-woven caning.

Position the stand in a light-filled space or bay window, styling the lower trough with potted botanical greenery while using the upper surface for architectural books or decorative ceramics.

Dust surfaces gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoid liquid chemical polishes on giltwood, and ensure water from plants remains entirely contained within the internal metal liner.
