A pair of Hepplewhite style pole screens in the Georgian style from the 19th century. These pieces are constructed from painted wood with polychrome and gilt finishes in a warm yellow and cream ground, featuring hand painted classical vignettes of a dancing maiden surrounded by foliage and husks of wheat. The design incorporates shaped shield panels, acorn finials atop the poles, urn details to the base, and turned tripod legs standing on spade feet. Measuring 140 cm high and 26.5 cm wide, they are designed for placement near a fireplace hearth in a living room, drawing room, or study to serve as a decorative accessory in an English country house setting today.

Pole screens were designed during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries to protect sitters faces from the intense heat of open hearth fires while preventing wax cosmetics from melting. They featured adjustable panels raised or lowered on a central vertical rod to shield the face directly.

Hepplewhite pole screens were typically constructed using light hardwoods such as mahogany, satinwood, or painted beech. The moveable panels contained needlework, painted silk, or decorated wooden boards, frequently set upon turned tripod bases with spade feet.

Authentic period pole screens display hand-carved construction details, turned brass or wooden adjustment screw fittings, and natural wear patterns along the central pole where the adjustment mechanism slides. Painted examples show craquelure, natural paint shrinkage, and period joinery on the underside of the tripod legs.

In contemporary interiors, pole screens function as decorative sculptures that frame a fireplace, flank a sideboard, or fill narrow architectural alcoves. Their vertical silhouette adds height to room arrangements without taking up substantial floor space.

Keep painted antique pole screens away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and moisture sources to prevent wood movement and paint flaking. Clean gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid solvents or abrasive polishes.
