This Georgian tea table originates from the 18th century, dating to circa 1770, and is built from solid dark brown Cuban mahogany. The piece takes a fold-over form with a single frieze drawer fitted with an original brass swan-neck handle, complemented by fluted and moulded legs, as well as a gate-leg support structure where the back legs meet in the centre when closed. The timber exhibits a rich dark grain finish with subtle natural variations across the top surface and drawer front. Practical for everyday use in a modern interior, this heavy table fits well against a narrow wall space in a hallway, living room or bedroom. When the top is unfolded, it provides an expanded surface area for serving drinks or displaying decorative items, while the compact closed depth of 38 cm and length of 82 cm make it suitable for smaller rooms where space is limited.

Georgian tea tables were designed during the 18th century as specialized social furniture, often featuring a fold-over top that allowed them to function as slim wall tables when closed and open into larger surfaces for tea service.

Dense dense hardwoods such as dense Cuban mahogany were primary choices due to their structural durability and rich grain, often complemented by solid oak or pine secondary woods for interior drawer linings and internal framing.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass bail handles with cast backing plates, hand-planed underside surfaces, and a swing-leg mechanism supported by hand-forged iron or wooden hinges.

When closed, these tables serve as slim hall consoles or side tables beneath artwork, while opening them provides an extended surface for display or occasional entertaining.

Clean surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish twice yearly, keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and high humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking or warping.
